Hey crew, I’ve only ever ridden a regular pushbike, mostly casual rides around town or along the beach paths. But lately I’ve been tempted by the idea of an electric mountain bike. Thing is, I’ve never done any “serious” trail riding, so I’m not sure if starting with an e-MTB is overkill. Do they feel too heavy or complicated for a beginner? I just want something that’ll let me explore a bit further without feeling like I’m dying halfway up every hill. Anyone else started their cycling journey on one of these?

Honestly, mate, e-MTBs are a fantastic entry point. They do weigh a bit more because of the motor and battery, but you’ll barely notice it once you’re riding. The assistance makes it way easier to build up confidence—especially when you hit steep climbs or rougher sections of trail. I started on one with zero “serious” biking experience and it honestly opened up a whole new world for me. If you want to have a look at some models, I grabbed mine here: https://www.merkx.com.au/collections/electric-mountain-bikes — heaps of options at different price points. The best part is you can set the motor to low or even turn it off if you feel like pushing yourself, then kick it back on when you need a boost. Great balance of fun and fitness without feeling overwhelmed.
