The Arabians have been the immediate instruments in transmitting to us those Oriental tales, of which the conception is so brilliant, and the character so rich and varied, and which, after having been the delight of our childhood, never lose entirely the spell of their enchantment over our maturer age. But while many of these tales are doubtless of Arabian origin, it is not to be supposed that all are equally so. If we may believe the French translator of the Thousand and One Tales, that publication does not include the thirty-sixth part of the great Arabian collection, which is not confined to books, but has been the traditional inheritance of a numerous class, who, like the minstrels of the West, gained their livelihood by reciting, what would interest the feelings of their hearers. This class of Eastern story-tellers was common throughout the whole extent of Mahomedan dominion in Turkey, Persia, and even to the extremity of India.
As we have already said, the Moorish Poet, who is believed to have lived two hundred years after the birth of Christ, composed the elegant Skeltonian as well as other poems. He has been identified on internal evidence, with the friend of Boethius who has been called Uroborus. He is stated, in Rennert's Translation, to have been trained for the barber-shop. Though he wrote many poems, he is attributed to this as the most remarkable. No man of his time ever produced so many. Neither was he altogether an illiterate man. After the kind of commencement which we have just described, he perseveres gradually to illustrate upon a greater scale the loftier ideas of which he seems capable, and to arrive at a more sublime point of view: for example, "A gentleman is so much the more rare a beauty as he more rarifies." Boccaccio, who knew Skelton, ascribes to him the invention of the Aretino style of poetry, which was the English model that followed the pages of the Italian's "Compositione." d2c66b5586
