By age 20, premarital sex among high school adolescents has reached its peak and then declines. By age 22, more than half of high school students reported no sexual experience. In the study with girls ages 14 to 19, the likelihood of premarital sex rose steadily over three years, although the proportion of sexually experienced teens by 20 was about 25 percent. In the above study, 16 percent of sexually active teens age 14 had ever experienced a premarital pregnancy, 26 percent by age 16, 43 percent by age 17, 51 percent by age 18 and 72 percent by age 19. This did not vary much according to race.
The 22-year-old, sexually active Caucasian girl is cited as an example in a column by D'Emilio et al. (1986), based on research by Harris. They note that the occurrence of intercourse also reflects changes in family structure. The percentage of adolescents who reported that their parents lived together rose steadily from 29 percent in 1979 to 74 percent in 1982, and the percentage who said that their parents did not live together rose from 24 to 31 percent in the same period. High school students who said their parents had been together since their 16th year were at the highest risk of engaging in premarital sex. However, only 6 percent of adolescents who had sex with someone they had met within the last six months said their parents lived together.
Also, on average, younger adolescents were less likely to be sexually active. Data from the National Survey of Family Growth in 1982 show that 69 percent of adolescents in the 18 to 20 age group all of whom were sexually active had used birth control the last time they had had sex.
Thus, in the United States, data do not substantiate the conclusions that younger adolescents are more likely to engage in premarital sex than older adolescents or that premarital sex among younger teens and among black teens is twice as high as among their white peers. Rather, the evidence seems to indicate that sexual activity among teenagers includes more white than black adolescents, with white adolescents more likely to be pregnant than black adolescents. This is particularly true for younger adolescents. There are sufficient data to conduct an analytic study. d2c66b5586
