Since the center of the program is in private practice the residency is the central feature. The core of the residency is a clinical experience of 100 patient visits per year. The residency is accredited by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Family Physicians. The selection of the residents is done competitively. There are two positions in the program; one in internal medicine and one in family practice. A third position is available for a third year doctor who wishes to complete his or her residency.
In partnership with the Family Practice Residency Program, we have developed a community-based family practice residency. This residency has a different framework than that of the University of Alabama Residency and the University of Alabama Hospital Residency. The residency involves private, group, and/or student practice.
The training experience is similar to other family practice residencies in the United States. We are fortunate that the medical center with which we are allied provides the majority of patients for our clinic.
In the spring of 1985 I returned to private practice and in 1986 joined the faculty of the University of Alabama School of Public Health as the Director of a new Family Practice Residency. I was concerned about the possibility of a reduction in teaching and scholarship if a residency were located in the state hospital. The University of Alabama School of Public Health was concerned about making the program viable. We utilized a program developed in California which would allow a faculty member to teach and do research in private practice.
I am grateful for this opportunity to be a teacher at Meharry Medical College. I am especially grateful to Dr. E. Benbakht Adams, Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, and Dr. John Crecelius, Dean of the School of Medicine. I am also indebted to the deans and staff of Meharry Medical College and to Mrs. Joanne West, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. I am a member of the Family Medicine Alumni Association.
For over twenty years I have been married to a physician, Dr. Ruth Beth Black, who is a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Our work is the practice of medicine, our family is a part of our practice, and we share in the financial responsibility for our patients. We have a son, David, and a daughter, Deborah.
I love teaching. I love the challenge of providing for my family and helping others. I enjoy the challenge of learning and growing. I love the great things that education can bring to my family, my community and my country. I am motivated to share what I have learned.
I believe that life is about the individual. Life is about the family, because it is about love. I believe that the family is the most important thing in life. I believe that family is about love. I believe that family is about responsibility. I believe that family is about caring. 827ec27edc
