A default encoding of a computer platform is a method of converting strings of bytes in an application to or from those same bytes in a human-readable form that is recognized by other systems in other applications, and is almost always expressed in terms of the ASCII character set.
Most computer program languages have a compiler (or similar tool that converts from human-readable source code into binary code for a computer's processor) and a runtime environment that loads the resulting binary into RAM for execution. The runtime environment can be manifest as an operating system, its own subroutine library, or an integrated development environment (IDE).
Many programs determine the encoding of source documents by querying the operating system for the ENCODING environment variable, using the values LANG or LC_ALL. The default encoding of most operating systems is called the system or native encoding.
A character set is a set of characters that are used for writing text. A character set may either be fixed or extended. A fixed set of characters has limited or no modifications and is generally used for situations where maximum safety is important like documents and encoded data. An extended set of characters allows for variations and modifications to increase the number of characters available for writing text. d2c66b5586
